September 2020 CFE – Waiver and safety protocols

The CPA profession plans to have a number of health and safety measures in place at the Common Final Examination (CFE) to mitigate the risks associated with COVID-19 to the extent possible. These measures may be subject to change as health and safety guidelines continue to evolve.

As a condition of writing the CFE, the profession is asking candidates to sign an acknowledgement of risk and waiver of liability, accepting all risks associated with writing the September 2020 CFE in light of COVID-19. Once candidates have reviewed the safety measures, they should read the waiver and submit a signed copy to their provincial/regional CPA body no later than July 28, 2020. Candidates who decline to sign the waiver will not be permitted to write the September 2020 CFE and will need to defer to a later offering.

Refer to the FAQ document for more information on the safety measures in place for the September 2020 CFE.

September 2020 CFE delivery

Following a comprehensive planning process, the profession is now able to announce the delivery approach for the September 2020 Common Final Examination (CFE). This plan to deliver the September 2020 CFE in-person recognizes physical distancing guidelines and addresses public health concerns.

Candidates will write the September 2020 CFE in-person at multiple hotels across the country in the usual cities where examination centres were held in the past. Each candidate will be assigned their own hotel room for the duration of the examination. Within each room, candidates will have access to their own washroom and writing desk. Candidates will be provided with CPA-issued laptops that will have Word, Excel, and Folio Views installed (Surpass will not be used on this CFE).

During the examination, hotel room doors will remain open and the writing desks will be visible from the hallway. Candidates and their invigilator, as required, will be the only persons permitted to access the rooms.

Refer to the FAQ for more information on the delivery of the September 2020 CFE.

As we work on the delivery approach for the September 2020 CFE, the profession is engaging in consultations with public health authorities across the country. All exam delivery options being considered and evaluated are in-person, comply with physical distancing guidelines, and address public health concerns.

The profession recognizes that you are anxious to receive firm details on the selected delivery approach. We will share this information broadly once specifics are finalized. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate through this tremendously complex and constantly evolving situation.

In addition, recommendations from public health authorities are being closely monitored to ensure the latest physical distancing guidelines are followed.

Revised CPA assessment formats

Refer to the FAQ document for additional information about the revised assessment formats that will be implemented for the upcoming CPA PEP module and CPA preparatory course examinations.

We would like to reiterate that the changes to the assessment format are in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions. While the formats are different, there are no changes to the testable content as outlined in the CPA Competency Map and course content. Once the restrictions end, the profession will revert to the normal formats for CPA PEP and CPA preparatory course assessments.

Capstone 1 presentations

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and related physical-distancing restrictions, the Capstone 1 panel presentations scheduled for July 4-9, 2020 will no longer take place in person. Instead, all teams will be required to submit a video recording of their panel presentations.

An FAQ document that provides information on how to prepare and submit the videos will be available on the Capstone 1 Module Discussion Board in D2L the week of May 4, 2020. The deadline for teams to submit their video(s) to the D2L Dropbox is Friday, July 3, 2020 at 11:55 pm Pacific Daylight Time.

Videos will be evaluated based on the quality of the presentation content and the presentation skills demonstrated. The quality of the video(s) will not be a factor in the evaluation. After submitting their video(s) for assessment, teams must make themselves available to answer questions from the panel, if required.

Online module workshops

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and to maintain the safety of our candidates and session leaders, all module workshops (including the Core 1 orientation workshop) beginning with the Spring 2020 modules will be delivered online through D2L until further notice.

The workshops will be held asynchronously, meaning you will be responsible for watching instructional videos and working through activities during the scheduled workshop weekend.

Activities will be due for submission on the Friday (11:55 pm PST) following the regularly scheduled workshop. Upon submission of each activity, candidates will receive access to an activity solution and debrief video (if applicable).

Watching the videos and submitting a response to ALL activities by the submission deadline is mandatory, failure to do so will result in removal from the module.

The feedback that will be provided for the submitted activities will be holistic (assessing reasonable effort) and will focus on building candidates’ enabling competencies.

Commitment to delivering June CPA assessments

We realize that many of you have concerns about your studies and upcoming exams as we navigate through these uncertain times. We want to assure you that the upcoming CPA PEP and CPA preparatory course assessments scheduled for June will not be cancelled. We do, however, need to make some adjustments based on the extended timeline of the physical-distancing restrictions. The assessments will no longer take place in-person at exam writing centres. Instead, we will administer remote assessment alternatives. Closer to the June assessment dates, you will be informed of the format that will be used for your particular module or course.

At this time the profession is expecting to deliver the CFE in September as planned. However, we are monitoring the COVID-19 situation daily and if a change is required, a decision will be made no later than late June.

Changes to cases for Capstone 1 modules and Day 1 of the CFE

To ensure fairness to students/candidates impacted by the cancellation of the May 2020 Common Final Examination (CFE) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the availability of the cases for the Capstone 1 modules and those tested on Day 1 of the CFEs for 2020 and 2021 that were previously announced have changed.

Normally, only two versions of a Capstone 1 case are used for Day 1 of the CFE and they are offered one year apart. However, the profession is making an exception with the use of the Distinct Hotels Corporation case and will make it available on the September 2020, May 2021, and the September 2021 CFEs. This will ensure that the case is available for candidates who

  • completed the January 2020 Capstone 1 module and are unable to write the CFE in September 2020
  • are unsuccessful on the Day 1 Distinct Hotel Corporation case on the September 2020 CFE and want to rewrite the same case on the September 2021 CFE.

Another exception is the repeat use of the Distinct Hotels Corporation case for the Capstone 1 module. Although the Distinct Hotels Corporation case was introduced in the January 2020 Capstone 1 module, it will also be introduced in the May 2020 Capstone 1 module, to align with the availability of version 1 of the case on the September 2020 CFE.

Below are the names of the cases that will be used in the upcoming Capstone 1 modules and available on Day 1 of the upcoming CFEs:

  • For the September 2020 CFE, candidates can choose from the following Capstone 1 module cases:
    • Distinct Hotels Corporation case (version 1) – introduced in the January 2020 Capstone 1 module
    • Marmani Inc. case (version 2) – introduced in the May 2019 Capstone 1 module. Please note: the Marmani Inc. case (version 3) will no longer be offered as previously stated.
  • For the May 2021 CFE, candidates can choose from the following Capstone 1 cases:
    • Waste Disposal Incorporated case (version 1) – introduced in the January 2021 Capstone 1 module
    • Distinct Hotels Corporation case (version 2) – introduced in the January 2020 and the May 2020 Capstone 1 modules.
  • For the September 2021 CFE, candidates can choose from the following Capstone 1 cases:
    • Creative Toys Incorporated case (version 1) – introduced in the May 2021 Capstone 1 module
    • Distinct Hotels Corporation case (version 3) – introduced in the January 2020 and the May 2020 Capstone 1 modules.

We are committed to keeping you informed of upcoming changes and will provide additional information once the details are available. Please refer to the FAQ document to address some questions you may have about changes to the certification program due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Clarification: Weekly activities submissions

If you are enrolled in a current CPA PEP module or CPA preparatory course, you are expected to continue to submit all course components by the existing deadlines as identified in Brightspace (D2L). CPA PEP students/candidates are reminded that they are required to meet the 75% threshold to be eligible to write the module-end exam. Additional information about the cancellation of the examinations and next steps are provided in the FAQ document.

Cancellation of CPA Examinations and the Capstone 2 Module

Faced with the growing concerns and uncertainties over COVID-19 and our commitment to provide a safe environment for our candidates, staff, and volunteers, the CPA profession has cancelled all April CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) and CPA preparatory course examinations and the May 2020 Common Final Examination (CFE). In addition, the Capstone 2 module scheduled to start on April 4, 2020 is cancelled. As well, all module in-person workshops for the Spring semester will now be delivered through an alternative format.  Once those details have been determined for the regions, the provincial/regional CPA bodies will contact all students directly to advise them of the new format.

The provincial/regional CPA bodies are contacting all affected students by email to advise them of this information and to let them know they will be automatically enrolled in the next exam or Capstone 2 offering. Additional accommodations are being made to enable CPA PEP and CPA preparatory course students to proceed to the next semester without having completed the pre-requisite course/module requirements, and to accommodate students who may have a program completion timeline expiring during this period.

The profession is dedicated to supporting students in their pursuit towards the CPA designation with the least amount of disruption as reasonably possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding during this challenging time.

We are committed to keeping you informed of upcoming changes and will provide additional information once the details are available. Please refer to the FAQ Document to address some questions you may have about the cancellations.
