Unification status of the Canadian accounting profession

All 40 accounting bodies in Canada are unified under the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) banner.

Unification status

Canada’s accounting profession of more than 210,000 members is represented by a single national body – Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada).

In January 2013, the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) and the Society of Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada) established CPA Canada. In October 2013, CPA Canada signed an agreement to merge with Certified General Accountants of Canada (CGA-Canada), which occurred on October 1, 2014, completing integration of the country’s national accounting bodies.

“Reorganization Time” – the time at which virtually all parties to unification became CPA bodies – occurred at exactly 11:59 p.m. on September 27, 2016. This was a pivotal point in the history of our profession. Unification – the goal that so many worked tirelessly to achieve under the leadership of the provincial and national councils and boards was essentially complete. This was both an exciting journey and an extraordinary achievement for the profession. All parties to unification are now Organization Members of CPA Canada.
